Private jet charter and flights to Juneau
On the edge of the Gastineau Channel and with towering, rainforest-clad mountains rising up around it, Juneau is one of the USA’s most scenic cities. Alaska’s state capital is only accessible by air or sea, and as a frequent stop on the popular Inside Passage cruise route it’s well set up for outdoor adventures like wildlife watching and glacier hiking. Experience it all, charter a private jet today.
Although most visitors to Juneau come for the natural attractions, the city has a cool Downtown district too. It’s a small area that’s easy to walk around and it has a handful of interesting sights. These include the Gold Rush-era bars of South Franklin Street, the Alaska State Museum and the Sealaska Heritage Centre which showcases the history and culture of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples. To get your bearings and for amazing views over the city, channel, Chilkat Mountains and beyond, take the gondola to the peak of Mount Roberts.
The real gem of Juneau is the Mendenhall Glacier (or Sitaantaago – the ‘Glacier Behind the Town’) which winds its way for over 13 miles from the Juneau Icefield to its terminus north of Downtown Juneau. The first port of call here is usually the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Centre which has exhibits and a film about the glacier and icefield. There’s also the short Photo Point Trail which takes you down to a viewing platform that looks towards the face of the ice.
If you want a more in-depth and physically challenging visit to Mendenhall, consider hiking the West Glacier Trail which follows the western edge of the lake right up to the glacier. Or you could head out onto the ice on a guided trek, then explore the lake by kayak and paddle between floating chunks of ice that have calved off the glacier.
Juneau is a city that’s surrounded by wildlife-rich landscapes and no trip here would be complete without a trip out on the water or into the forest. From April to November, whale-watching trips depart for Tracy Arm – a fjord to the south of the city. Humpback whales are the most common species you’ll see, closely followed by orca. During your cruise, you might also spot playful seals, bald eagles soaring above the water and leaping salmon.
The area’s salmon-filled rivers and creeks attract black and brown bears. These incredible creatures are frequently seen in the surrounding forests and sometimes in the city itself. For the best chance to spot foraging bears, take an unforgettable float plane trip over to Admiralty Island National Monument, just to the south of Juneau. The island’s Pack Creek is the prime bear-watching spot, especially in July and August when the annual salmon run takes place.
Juneau is the gateway to the breathtaking Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, another place that can only be reached by water or air. This park, which is part of an extensive UNESCO World Heritage Site that spans Alaska and Canada, is a wild land of mountains, forests and icecaps that feed multiple meandering glaciers. You can stay overnight at the Glacier Bay Lodge and take part in activities such as hiking, kayaking, rafting and fishing. There are also more chances for wildlife watching with similar marine and land species that can be seen around Juneau.
